Transport fuel for a greener future
What is compressed natural gas?
Compressed natural gas is methane stored at high pressure, and used as transport fuel instead of petrol or diesel. It’s a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels, reducing our impact on the environment and consequently, the air we breathe.
Cleaner and greener fuel
When combusted, CNG produces fewer fumes compared to Euro 6 diesel engines, cutting particulate matter by 100% and nitrogen oxides by 90%, reducing carbon emissions by a quarter.
Improving air quality and noise
CNG is a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels, reducing our impact on the environment and consequently, the air we breathe.
CNG trucks are also 50% quieter than diesel-fuelled counterparts, meaning noise pollution on our streets would also be noticeably reduced if HGVs and buses were to swap diesel for CNG.
It’s also a more affordable option, with prices less sensitive to negative fluctuations than oil.
And it could provide the perfect solution to improving air quality in our cities if it were to become the HGV fuel of choice.
Opportunities to get connected
We have identified a prime opportunity for the development of a CNG refuelling site on our gas network, near Lamesley, Gateshead. We are looking to partner with organisations to develop the site and promote the potential of CNG to power green transport in the UK.

We'd love to talk to you about our CNG project in Lamseley
We will be holding a project briefing in Leeds on Wednesday 21 August to discuss the opportunity in Lamesley as well as answer any questions that you may have. If you’re interested in attending please sign up by completing the form below. We hope to see you there!
