Engineers from Northern Gas Networks (NGN) responded to a suspected gas escape on the A19 between Burn and Chapel Haddlesey YO8 8QF yesterday lunchtime (Sunday 15 July) and made the situation safe.

The NGN team worked quickly to identify the location of the leak and repair the pipe and are working hard to complete this work as quickly as possible.

The road closure has now been removed, however to ensure that engineers can continue to work safely, one lane of the A19 remains closed between Burn and Chapel Haddlesey and two-way temporary traffic lights have been put in place.

Mark Austerberry, Site Manager at Northern Gas Networks said: “We’d like to thank everyone for bearing with us while we carried out our investigations and worked to repair the pipe.

“The safety of members of the public is our priority and we’re pleased to confirm that we made good progress yesterday and we’ve now reopened the road to traffic.

“Two- way traffic lights are now in place while our teams complete the repair and return the road to normal.  This includes backfilling the excavations that we’ve dug and resurfacing the road. We’ll be working hard to complete this work as soon as possible, however this may take a few days.”

The gas supply to homes and businesses in the area is not affected.

Anyone who smells gas or suspects carbon monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.  This line is in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
