The ageing metal pipework is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future.

The work will begin on 26th February 2024 in Balmoral Terrace and the entire project is expected to last approximately 9 weeks. This work has been planned in collaboration with Sunderland City Council.

So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, temporary traffic lights will be in place on the junction of Balmoral Terrace and Silksworth Lane from Monday 26th February for approximately two weeks.

There will be a full signage system in place for motorists.

The work will then continue up Sandringham Crescent and Silksworth Road leading to Farringdon. We will then have three way lights at the junction of Allendale Road and Silksworth Road from Monday 8th April for approximately two weeks.

Delays in this area are to be expected at commute times due to the close proximity of Farringdon Comprehensive School and Doxford International Business Park.

The work is due to be completed in its entirety Monday 29th April.

Northern Gas Networks to carry out essential upgrade work to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply in South Street area of Durham.

Read

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Durham Centre.

The ageing steel gas main has undergone several recent emergency repairs, so has now been prioritised for urgent replacement. The ageing pipework is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers.

The work will begin Thursday 29th February and last approximately 7 weeks. The work will start on Pimlico and continue down South Street towards central Durham.

Due to the location of the gas main and the narrow road we will need to close South Street in 100 metre sections to carry this work out safely and efficiently.

This is usually a one-way street. However, Durham County Council have agreed to let residents only access via Crossgate to access private car parks. A diversion route will be in place for these residents.

NGN’s customer care officer will be visiting all businesses and residents ahead of the project to inform them of the works and how it will impact them.

Shaun Williams, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents and businesses of Durham.”

NGN develops the next generation of energy sector talent

Read

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is developing the next generation of talent at a vital time for the energy sector as it gets ready to transition to net zero.

With climate change one of the biggest issues to face future generations, an apprenticeship is one way to be at the heart of the solution to the problem and to help shape the future of energy.

Today NGN employs over 80 apprentices throughout the North East, Yorkshire and northern Cumbria and aims to have 100 apprentices working for the organisation as part of its 2,000 strong team by 2026.

First launched in 2005, NGN’s apprentice programme has expanded over the years to offer academic training and on-the-job learning for both operational and back-office roles, with opportunities spanning engineering as well as business administration, HR, communications, operational training, gas connections and finance roles.

Last year NGN introduced Degree Apprenticeships, with four employees currently benefiting from a paid-for degree while getting valuable industry experience and at the same time earning a salary.

As well as educating and upskilling people in readiness for future roles in the energy sector, the gas distributer is also committed to seeking people from diverse backgrounds who haven’t necessarily considered a career in the energy industry before.

Mark Horsley, CEO at Northern Gas Networks said:

“As an anchor company embedded in the region that we serve, we have a responsibility to make a positive difference to the lives of people living and working in the North of England.  That includes improving access to good employment opportunities and supporting people to develop sustainable skills to help them prosper and thrive in their careers and life.

“It’s an exciting time in our industry as we get our network ready to support the transition to net zero, investing in future talent is essential to meet the challenges ahead.  Recruiting from a broad talent base and reaching out to people from wide ranging backgrounds is vital to ensure that we have the right people in the roles for the future.”

As part of NGN’s commitment to breaking down traditional barriers to employment and making opportunities accessible for all, the company has in some cases adjusted entry level criteria so that apprenticeships are an option for those who don’t already have specific academic qualifications such as English and Maths GCSE, supporting these individuals to gain these qualifications as part of their training.

Chris Adair, Training and Apprenticeship Manager at Northern Gas Networks said:

“As a business we actively pursue initiatives that improve access to opportunities and fair employment and we seek to recruit apprentices from a variety of backgrounds, especially socially deprived areas where younger people may not always have the knowledge, support or access to different career paths.

“Helping people to understand the industry and the varied career options it presents for the future workforce is vital to reaching the UK’s climate targets and apprenticeships are a great way of doing that.  At NGN we’re committed to offering more than just a foot in the door, but a sustainable path to a long term, rewarding career in the energy sector.”

NGN’s apprenticeship scheme is so successful that many colleagues who joined the business as apprentices have pursued successful careers at NGN and now hold senior leadership roles in the organisation.

Mark began his own career at 16 as an apprentice cable jointer with the then North Eastern Electricity Board in York. Upon finishing his four-year apprenticeship, he began work as an electrical craftsman before progressing to senior leadership roles.

Essential work to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to homes and businesses in Headingley is underway

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), has begun work to upgrade the gas distribution network on Otley Road in Headingley.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in underground infrastructure and will involve replacing existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes. This will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The ageing underground main has undergone several recent emergency repairs, so has now been prioritised for urgent replacement.

The 8-week project began on Monday 29 January at the junction of St Annes Road and will progress to the junction of Weetwood Lane.

In order for engineers to carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect members of the public, the essential work will require traffic management measures to be in place.  These include:

  • Two-way traffic signals at the junction of St Annes Road with immediate effect throughout the duration of the project. Temporary traffic lights will be monitored daily from 7am-7pm to help manage the flow of traffic
  • Road closure on Burton Crescent and St Chads Drive from 31 January – 13 February
  • Road closure at the junction of Weetwood Lane and Otley Road from 29 February – 8 March

Access will be maintained for homes and businesses and diversion routes will be clearly signposted.

The inbound and outbound bus lanes on Otley Road will be suspended for the full duration of the project and temporary bus stops will be clearly displayed during this time. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Brad Metcalf, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We have worked closely with Leeds City Council to carefully plan these essential works.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and we thank everyone for their patience as we work to complete this project as safely and as quickly as possible.”
