The ageing main serving Leeds Road and Killinghall Road has undergone several recent emergency repairs, so has now been prioritised for urgent replacement.

The metal pipework is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now, while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels such as hydrogen in the future.

The work begins today (14th February 2023) and is expected to last for approximately one and half weeks. It has been planned in collaboration with Bradford Council.

So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some traffic management measures will be put in place.

This will be completed in two phases, starting with a section Leeds Road going into Bradford City Centre. When this section has been completed work will then move on to Killinghall Road outside Mr Values.

Traffic management may be extended if difficulties in the mains configuration is identified once works start.

To minimise the impact on traffic, traffic management will be manned all day between the hours of 7am and 7pm. This section of the scheme has also been planned to be done in the school holidays to help minimise impact on traffic congestion. Warning signs will be in situ, providing motorists with advanced notification.

While majority of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers may need to access customer properties to complete the project and ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas.

Chris Green, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Bradford.

The ageing main has undergone several recent emergency repairs, so has now been prioritised for urgent replacement.

The twenty-week project has been planned in conjunction with Leeds city Council. In order for engineers to carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect members of the public, temporary 4-way traffic signals will be in place at the junction of Shaw Lane, Otley Road and Burton Crescent for approximately 2 weeks from Monday 20th February. Northern Gas Networks essential upgrade work on Whitley Road, Dewsbury, to now involve road closure

Read

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, has apologised for any additional disruption after unexpected complications have meant essential gas mains work on Whitley Road, Dewsbury, now require a full road closure rather than temporary traffic lights.

A scheme to replace the ageing metal pipework with new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers, began on the 9th November 2022 and is due to be completed by the 12th April 2023.

The original intention was to install temporary traffic lights in order to carry out the work. However, difficulties accessing a gas main located in the middle of the highway has proved more complex than originally thought.

As a result, a section of Whitley Road from Three Horseshoes Riding Centre to The junction of Jacksons Lane will need to be closed for approximately six weeks so that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently.

A full signed diversion is in place but there is likely to be some disruption to traffic flow, especially at peak times.

Christopher Nevison, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the unavoidable extension of these essential works.

“However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Dewsbury.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we’ll be working hard to complete this scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Main Road, High Harrington, Workington.

The ageing metal pipework is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future.

So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some traffic management measures will be put in place during the works.

Due to the nature of the work, temporary traffic lights have been erected on High Harrington Road on 23rd January. From 30th January it will be necessary to introduce a southbound one-way system from The Kiln Green/Main junction down towards The Brewery pub road for a 5-week period. This traffic management has been put in place in collaboration with Cumbria County Council.

Customer service recognised with prestigious kitemark

Read

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, has been officially recognised for its commitment to supporting vulnerable customers.

BSI, the business standards and improvement company, has awarded NGN the prestigious Inclusive Service Kitemark in recognition of its inclusive and flexible approach to customer service.

The decision comes after an intensive two part two-part assessment and a programme of ongoing surveillance against the ISO Standard 22458 ‘Consumer vulnerability – Requirements and guidelines for the design and delivery of inclusive service’.

NGN’s Customer Experience Director Eileen Brown said: “We’ve held held BSI 18477 since 2018, so that stood us in very good stead for the transition to the international standard and Kitemark.

“We take great pride in making every contact count with our customers and always aim to deliver more than expected, whilst continually looking to improve. The award of this Kitemark, is testament to the teamwork and ethos that runs through the business, when it comes to supporting our customers, in particular, those who require extra help.”

ISO Standard 22458 covers topics such as the identification of customer vulnerability, inclusive design of products and services are covered, as well as the adoption of AI (artificial intelligence) and data collection, protection and sharing to ensure that organizations are creating an inclusive service for all.

The Kitemark has industry specific requirements which have tested the organizations’ processes with evidence they are meeting performance metrics in these areas. It provides a framework to help organizations and their employees understand the underlying factors involved in consumer vulnerability, and work to develop processes, implement services, collaborate with partners and look at new innovations to help overcome this challenge and any future challenges they may face.

Additionally, the Kitemark aligns with regulators including Ofgem, Ofwat FCA, United Regulators NI and their strategies which are driving organizations to do more to safeguard customers in vulnerable situations.

Town pilot bid submitted

Read

Northern Gas Networks has submitted a bid to the Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to host hydrogen town pilots on its gas network

Northern Gas Networks has identified areas for potential town pilots in Hull and East Riding, Teesside and Leeds. Any areas which are selected for development by the Government in the spring will be progressed with outline plans to explore further how they could be converted to hydrogen.  A town pilot would follow a hydrogen village of around 2,000 properties using 100% hydrogen from 2025 and would only progress if a positive decision about hydrogen for heat being, which is currently expected around 2026 is made by the Government..

BEIS invited gas distribution networks to propose plans for conversion of over 10,000 properties from natural gas to hydrogen by 2030, ahead a potential national roll out. The Government’s 10 Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution and the British energy security strategy includes a hydrogen town pilot by the end of the decade.  Hydrogen could be used to provide heat in the future as, unlike the natural gas we use today, it doesn’t create any carbon when burned, so aligns with Net Zero.

Northern Gas Networks is currently finalising its proposal to host the first hydrogen village on its network in Redcar.   The proposal would see the gas network for around 2,000 properties converted to 100% hydrogen from 2025. The detailed design includes liaising with the local community and developing plans to locally produce and store hydrogen. A decision about whether the Redcar project will go ahead is expected around summer 2023.
