Energy support scheme hits major milestone

Read

A pioneering community network set up to support vulnerable people across the region with their energy costs is celebrating after hitting a major milestone.

Selby-based Yorkshire Energy Doctor CIC set up its ‘Community Energy Ambassadors’ scheme during the first Covid lockdown in April 2020 to offer specialist online training to voluntary and public sector bodies looking after vulnerable residents in their community.

Backed by funding from Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the north of England, the courses focus on providing reliable advice on how to cope with soaring energy bills.

Three years on, Yorkshire Energy Doctor is celebrating having accredited 500 Ambassadors  from over 250 organisations across Yorkshire, the North East and Cumbria.

Kate Urwin, Director of Yorkshire Energy Doctor, said: “The Community Energy Ambassadors project is all about equipping trusted organisations and individuals with up-to-date information and practical resources on all things to do with energy and support schemes, information that can then be shared with vulnerable households in their own local communities. This includes spreading the word on important ways to stay safe and well and our Energy Ambassadors have given talks on the risks of carbon monoxide and signed vulnerable households onto the Priority Services Register.”

“Our course is nothing like it was when we started in 2020 as the whole energy landscape has changed so much. We’ve moved from encouraging people to save money by switching energy supplier to dealing with unprecedented energy prices and supporting people through the current energy crisis.”

Feedback provided from the Energy Ambassadors shows that nearly 7,000 people have received energy advice on the back of the project with £182,512 of financial savings identified. Many more have received information through newsletters and social media channels.

Kate added: “Millions of households are struggling this winter and working with our trained Energy Ambassadors has been an excellent way of cascading information into local communities, reaching far more people than we could ever achieve on our own.”

Eileen Brown, NGN’s Customer Experience Director, said: “We’re committed as a business to doing everything we can to help and support our most vulnerable customers. Sometimes the best way we can do this is to provide financial backing to fantastic community-based organisations like Yorkshire Energy Doctor, who are doing such great work on the ground.”

NGN partners with MyBnk charity to help young people tackle fuel poverty during Global Money Week

Read

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the north of England, has partnered with financial education charity MyBnk to empower young people to make more sustainable and cost-effective choices when it comes to energy as part of Global Money Week.

Global Money Week 2023 is a global campaign on the importance of building the financial capability of young people running from Monday 20 March. This year’s theme is “plan your money, plant your future”, focusing on sustainability and money. Research from financial tech company GoHenry shows 71% of children and teenagers worry about the rising cost of living, so we’re keen to help young people build skills, knowledge, and confidence around these topics from an early age.

With support from the other UK gas distribution networks SGN, Cadent, and Wales & West Utilities, NGN and MyBnk have developed a ‘Fuel Finance’ programme for 9-to-11 year olds. It adds an additional session to MyBnk’s flagship ‘Money Twist’ financial education programme for schools, helping them consider the impact of energy consumption on both the environment and their cost of living. Students develop an understanding of real-world issues and practical steps they can take to help reduce fuel poverty.

The partnership will run for three years and aims to reach over 8,000 young people across the UK, focusing on some of the country’s most deprived areas. The programme also provides packs for children to take home, engaging the adults in their lives through family-led activities such as games and comic books.

Rebekah Young, Senior Fundraising Manager at MyBnk, said: “In the midst of a cost of living and climate crisis, learning about energy is more important than ever. With support from the gas networks, we can equip more young people across the UK with the knowledge, skills and confidence to manage their money and living costs, make more sustainable choices and stay safe in their homes.”

Northern Gas Networks extends partnership with Scouts to raise awareness of the ‘silent killer’

Read

Northern Gas Networks, the gas distributor for the north of England, has launched its new suite of carbon monoxide (CO) awareness activities with The Scout Association to help educate young people about the dangers of the CO and how to keep themselves and their families safe from the ‘silent killer’.

A year into the three-year partnership with fellow gas networks SGN, Wales & West Utilities and Cadent, NGN has launched the next set of activities for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers, helping them to understand the signs of CO, the symptoms of CO poisoning, and what steps to take if they think the poisonous gas is present in their homes. The newest set of activities include useful camping recipes embedded with CO safety information, and a new mystery game where players must identify what the undetected danger is.

Carbon monoxide is known as the ‘silent killer’ because you can’t see, smell, taste or hear it and can kill very quickly without warning. The symptoms of CO poisoning are very similar to flu and can often be mistaken for the common cold. The partnership aims to give as many people as possible the knowledge they need to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.

Adding to the four activities which were created last year for Beavers (6-8 years) and Cubs (8-10 years), the six new activities are also suitable for Scouts (10-14 years), and Explorers (14-18 years).

Cubs can still earn their Cubs Home Safety Activity Badge through completing the activities, which has been sponsored by the gas networks, when learning how to prevent accidents in the home and gaining knowledge on what to do if they occur.

Through the partnership, training and guidance is also being provided for adult volunteers about CO safety, so they are better equipped to teach the young people in their groups, and to make sure everyone stays safe in meeting places and on camps.

NGN Customer Experience Director, Eileen Brown, said: “We’re thrilled to be in our second year of partnership with Scouts to teach more young people across the UK about carbon monoxide. By partnering with The Scouts Association and sponsoring the Cubs Home Safety Activity Badge, we know these young members will be actively making sure their homes are safe from CO and any other potential dangers to gain their new badge.

“Most Scouts and Explorers take part in some form of camping but are unaware of the potential CO dangers whilst enjoying their expeditions. Our new activities will make sure they know not to put themselves at risk by doing things like cooking inside their tents.

“Our new activities also include instructions on how to maintain the audible CO alarm in your home, which is one of the simplest ways to keep your household safe. You should always make sure your CO alarm is batteries are tested regularly, and that the alarm is replaced if it comes to the end of its useable life.”

The Scout Association’s Head of Media Relations Simon Carter said: “Understanding the dangers of Carbon monoxide is important for everyone. The activities we have created use the expertise from the UK gas companies to embed this crucial safety message in a fun, engaging way that builds skills for life. The activities encourage young people to consider the dangers of Carbon Monoxide when cooking over a fire, or to use their detective skills to solve a mystery. Through this partnership, we can equip over 350,000 young people with important skills that may one day save a life.”

NGN celebrates International Women’s Day on 8th March with stories of inspiring females

Read

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, has paid its own tribute to International Women’s Day by asking four of its female staff members to blog about the women that inspire them in their lives today.

This year’s annual celebration of women is ‘embracing equity’ so its no surprise that our collection of stories feature a wide range of role models who all demonstrate the importance of equity in societies, families and workplaces.

Dionne Allick, Payroll Advisor, HR

“Mayo Angelou inspires me. Born in 1928 in Missouri she experienced racial prejudices and discrimination as well as a difficult childhood. She went on to become known as a world-famous author, civil rights and equality activist, recipient of fifty honorary degrees, teacher and worked in the performing arts during her lifetime. I find a lot of her quotes uplifting. She was never hesitant to speak her mind and passionately defended the rights of women, young people and the ignored.

“The topic that mostly resonates with me is advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women. Being an Afro-Caribbean woman, I have been subjected to sexism and racism from all genders. Working in the utility sector all my life I have seen substantial changes but ongoing improvement is still required.

“Since World War 1 the work and home life balance were introduced and went against primal instincts. Women are super-heroes. I would be depicted as an empath in a super-hero movie.”

Bina Dixon, Regulatory Reporting Manager

“I was asked to talk about a woman who inspired me and that person for me was and is my older sister. She was the first female I knew who went away to university and broadened both mine and my younger sister’s horizons. She paved the way for us to move away from home to pursue our education. Education was the key for me to lead an independent life and allowed me the ability to choose my own path.

“I was brought up in a very male orientated culture and it has always been important to me that both male and females are treated the same. As a mother to a son now, it is important that we teach the new generation that females and males are equal. As women working in utilities, it is up to us to be seen as role models and for this to be normalised. When I was young there were no women in industry that we could aspire to be, and it is great to see academies like STEM giving us a platform to be able to reach the new generation.”

Heather Sheffield, Head of Strategic Planning

“I’ve worked in the utility sector for nearly 20 years and have held predominantly male dominated roles. What’s most important to me is supporting other women to achieve and excel in their careers and overall work life balance. I see myself as a cheerleader for all women I work with, and I would not have achieved what I have in my career without the support of other women in what is a male dominated sector.

“I’m really passionate about women prioritising professional development, networking, mentoring and tackling our imposter syndrome! It’s really important to me that I am authentic as a person at work and championing equality and diversity is part of my core values. I truly believe that you need to be able to see diversity at work and in leadership to give you the inspiration, courage and belief that you can achieve it!

“Another passion of mine is encouraging women and girls to play sport. I am actively involved in the development of Women and Girls cricket in West Yorkshire and I coordinate and captain our local Women’s team. Sport builds confidence and resilience and having an option for older girls and women to continue playing a team sport like cricket brings multiple benefits including confidence in what they can achieve.”

Mahliqa Nisar, Business Sustainability Lead

Until the age of 6 I lived with my grandma Sultana Bibi Hamid. She was small by size with a huge heart of gold, an energy that brought peace and calm. Her main hobbies were sneaking her grandkids Werthers Originals, uniting all walks of people over a divine home cooked meal and hoarding!

Fast forward, I’m in year 9, I’ve been tasked with writing a biography, I chose my nan. The day I interviewed my nan was emotional to say the least. The warm, loving woman I knew all those years had lived through the Partition of India: seeing and experiencing brutality, losing 85% of her family and uprooting her whole life to migrate to Pakistan. Sultana then later migrated to the UK with my grandad where they lost 4 children, though blessed with 6. When their youngest child was 3, Sultana lost her husband to cancer: in a foreign environment, unable to speak English and a single mother to 6 children, giving up wasn’t an option.

She wept though, she persevered and it was her drive and fight that left her an international landlord and straight up boss! My nan is a true warrior and inspiration to me and my entire family. She never gave up, never took no for an answer, fearlessly continued to strive for more and it’s because of her fight I’m here today: standing proud of who I am and where I come from, giving my all to every opportunity, seeking challenge and hosting an expensive amount of home dinners.
I wouldn’t be who or where I am if it wasn’t for Sultana.

Signs will be displayed for motorists before and during the works but there will be some delays in the area, especially at commute times.
