Northern Gas Networks to carry out essential upgrade work to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply in Harrogate.

Read

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Harrogate.

The ageing metal pipework is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future.

The work will start on Monday 2nd of October and is expected to last for seven weeks.

It has been planned in close collaboration with North Yorkshire County Council Highways and follows a first phase of town centre works which were completed at Crescent Road and Montpellier Road in Autumn 2022.

So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some traffic management measures will be put in place.

Crescent Road lane closure and traffic lights

A lane closure will be introduced on Crescent Road and Ripon Road along with four-way lights on the junction of Crescent Road, Parliament Street, Ripon Road and Kings Road for two weeks. The existing lights will be bagged, and temporary traffic lights will be in operation from 7am to 7pm.

Montpellier Road (Round-about) & Montpellier Hill Lane closure

A lane closure will be implemented on Montpellier Road (Round-about) & Montpellier Hill Lane for two weeks.

Cold Bath Road traffic lights and parking suspensions

Multiple 2 and 3-way lights will be introduced on Cold Bath Road for five weeks starting from the 2nd of October.

Wellington Square Road closure

A road closure will be implemented on Wellington Square for two weeks.

Signs will be displayed for motorists and traffic lights will be manned seven days a week between 7am and 7pm, to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.

While the majority of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers will need to access customer properties to complete the project and ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas.

Scott Kitchingman, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience to customers caused during these essential works, but it’s vital that we complete this project to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Harrogate.

“We completed phase 1 of this project in Autumn 2022. It was a complex scheme during which we faced multiple engineering challenges because of the depth of the gas main.

“This caused a delay to our timescales and meant we were unable to complete the following phase within a reasonable timeframe without impacting customers and businesses during the busy Christmas period.

“Collaborating closely with North Yorkshire County Council, we’ve worked hard to review the remaining work and plan this final phase in a way that minimises impact to residents and local businesses as much as possible.

“Our Customer Care officers will be visiting customers throughout the coming weeks to update them on the works and understand any questions or concerns people may have.

“We thank customers for their patience in the meantime as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible.”

About Northern Gas Networks

Since we started operating in 2005, we’ve been leading the way as one of the most cost-efficient of the UK’s eight gas distribution networks. We deliver great value for money to our customers, as well as a whole host of social and economic benefits to our region.

We’re recognised as a dynamic, passionate, conscious and people focused team that safely and reliably delivers gas to over 2.7 million homes and businesses across the North East, northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire.

Although we don’t source the gas, fix boilers and appliances, or get involved with plumbing, we work with those that do to deliver it through a vast network of underground pipes that are constantly being invested in and upgraded.

It’s more complicated than it sounds so we’re always exploring cutting-edge thinking, revolutionary engineering practices and world-class science to find new ways to provide sustainable sources of energy.

And while our customers may not see us very often, they can sleep soundly knowing that we’re working around the clock to keep them connected and make sure they stay safe.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) supports health-related projects across the North

Read

Having rolled out 65 projects supporting customers in vulnerable situations, NGN is seeking to cast its net wider to find additional partners across the North East, northern Cumbria and Yorkshire.

Gas distributor Northern Gas Networks recently met with health and social care specialists and groups with vested interests with the aim of tackling the impact of fuel poverty on health outcomes.

Given that 1 in 5 gas customers may need extra support during their interactions with NGN, yet they might only deal with the gas network once in their lifetime, it is essential that NGN has a strategy that focusses on looking after customers in vulnerable situations.

As part of its Customer Vulnerability strategy, NGN organises throughout the year, events aimed at addressing the issues facing customers in vulnerable situations, bringing together its wide-ranging partnership network to develop and roll out best practice and share experiences.

Speaking to its partners, NGN, which transports gas to 2.7 million homes and businesses across the North East, northern Cumbria and Yorkshire, hears first-hand what customers in vulnerable situations need.

Recently, delegates came together to speak with the team about their invaluable work to date and future plans to support people facing and experiencing fuel poverty.

NGN works closely with several partners across the region where it operates. Through its Ofgem-funded Vulnerability and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Allowance (VCMA), NGN provides funding to organisations, who are experts in their fields to advise and help resolve, with practical solutions the problems people face when they struggle to keep their homes warm.

It is now widely understood that homes that are cold due to fuel poverty exacerbate health inequalities and the area where NGN operates contains some of the most economically challenged communities in the UK, from remote parts of rural Northumberland to deprived areas of Bradford.

Eileen Brown, Customer Experience at NGN said:

“We were delighted that so many organisations gave their time to collaborate with us on how best to direct the funds that we have available to support local projects tackling the issues impacting our communities.

“Understanding and hearing the issues from these experts is essential for us to be able to provide financial support to on-the-ground organisations directly helping people who are really struggling and worrying about keeping warm as the colder months approach.

Cold homes can cause or worsen a range of serious health conditions and people can die because of living in a cold home. Fuel poverty can also have a significant impact on mental health.

“Working with expert partners across our region means we can target advice and awareness to where it’s needed most and develop projects delivering tangible benefits to peoples’ lives.”

Hannah Greason, Tackling Poverty Officer at Gateshead Council said:

“Tackling fuel poverty is a core priority for my team at the Council, so it’s really encouraging to hear what Northern Gas has done and is planning to do in their efforts to support vulnerable residents. It was also particularly insightful to hear NEA’s updates on Warm Home Prescriptions which I didn’t know about until now. Another informative and well-executed workshop from NGN!”

Northern Gas Networks is currently working on 65 projects across its geographical footprint and is now looking for additional partners to come on board. If you’d like to hear more about funding available through Northern Gas Networks, please get in touch with Stephanie Ord SOrd@northerngas.co.uk

Community groups and charities in the North East of England are being invited to apply for grants of up to £10,000, to help make local communities warmer and safer.

As Autumn approaches, many people will start to think about how to keep their homes warm. Do you work for an organisation that supports people experiencing or at risk of fuel poverty? Northern Gas Networks wants to hear from you, we can help you, help those in need.

Community groups and charities in the North East of England are being invited to apply for grants of up to £10,000, to help make local communities warmer and safer.

Northern Gas Networks’ Community Partnering Fund at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland aims to primarily support those who are likely to be affected by the energy and cost of living crises. Grants of between £1,000 and £10,000 are available for organisations to support their communities.

Eileen Brown, Customer Experience Director at Northern Gas Networks said: “It is a privilege for us here at Northern Gas Networks to be able to provide financial support to organisations who help people who are really struggling and worrying about keeping warm as the colder months approach.

“The Fund is however, not just limited to tackling fuel poverty, we are working hard to raise awareness of the dangers of Carbon Monoxide poisoning and the benefits of being on the Priority Services Register, which aims to ensure that support for the most vulnerable in society is prioritised in the event of a loss of gas or electricity supply.

“The benefits of being placed on the register range from being provided with alternative cooking and heating equipment, to provision of hot meals, and even alternative accommodation if this is needed.

“Awareness and advice about Carbon Monoxide and the Priority Services Register can make such a difference to people in their everyday lives and being aware can sometimes mean the difference between life and death in the unfortunate event of exposure to Carbon Monoxide.”

The Northern Gas Networks Partnering Fund at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland will consider applications from organisations looking to support the aims of the Fund, , further information and how to apply can be found here: https://www.communityfoundation.org.uk/grants/supporting-vulnerable-communities-to-stay-warm-and-safe/.

Pete Barrett, Senior Programmes Advisor at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland said: “We are delighted the Northern Gas Networks Community Partnering Fund will continue for a further year, helping to support voluntary and community sector organisations to support some of the most vulnerable communities here in the North East at a time of great need.

“If you’d like to hear more about the Northern Gas Networks Community Partnering Fund here at the Community Foundation, or your organisation would like to discuss an application, please get in touch.”
