Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Durham Centre.
The ageing steel gas main has undergone several recent emergency repairs, so has now been prioritised for urgent replacement. The ageing pipework is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers.
The work will begin Thursday 29th February and last approximately 7 weeks. The work will start on Pimlico and continue down South Street towards central Durham.
Due to the location of the gas main and the narrow road we will need to close South Street in 100 metre sections to carry this work out safely and efficiently.
This is usually a one-way street. However, Durham County Council have agreed to let residents only access via Crossgate to access private car parks. A diversion route will be in place for these residents.
NGN’s customer care officer will be visiting all businesses and residents ahead of the project to inform them of the works and how it will impact them.
Shaun Williams, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents and businesses of Durham.”
