The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), has begun work to upgrade the gas distribution network on Otley Road in Headingley.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in underground infrastructure and will involve replacing existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes. This will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The ageing underground main has undergone several recent emergency repairs, so has now been prioritised for urgent replacement.

The 8-week project began on Monday 29 January at the junction of St Annes Road and will progress to the junction of Weetwood Lane.

In order for engineers to carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect members of the public, the essential work will require traffic management measures to be in place.  These include:

  • Two-way traffic signals at the junction of St Annes Road with immediate effect throughout the duration of the project. Temporary traffic lights will be monitored daily from 7am-7pm to help manage the flow of traffic
  • Road closure on Burton Crescent and St Chads Drive from 31 January – 13 February
  • Road closure at the junction of Weetwood Lane and Otley Road from 29 February – 8 March

Access will be maintained for homes and businesses and diversion routes will be clearly signposted.

The inbound and outbound bus lanes on Otley Road will be suspended for the full duration of the project and temporary bus stops will be clearly displayed during this time. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Brad Metcalf, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We have worked closely with Leeds City Council to carefully plan these essential works.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and we thank everyone for their patience as we work to complete this project as safely and as quickly as possible.”

If customers have any questions about the work they can contact NGN’s Customer Care team on 0800 040 7766 or email customercare@northerngas.co.uk
