Andrew Coates, Site Manager at Northern Gas Networks (NGN) said: “I can confirm that we are dealing with some emergency gas works to an inside lane closure on the A19, and slip road closure off Abingdon Way Boldon on to the A19.
“We have a road closure in place on the inside Lane to allow excavation works to take place while allowing drivers to pass safely.
“At this moment, we cannot give a timescale of how long it will take to resolve the problem. Please be assured however we are working as quickly and as safely as possible.”
Anyone that smells gas or suspects carbon monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999. This line is in operation 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
