Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential gas mains replacement work in Consett to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers.

The ageing main has undergone several recent repairs, so has now been prioritised for urgent replacement. The pipe is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers for years to come.

The 14 week project will see nearly 3km of old main replaced, starting on Monday 13th February, having been planned in close collaboration with Durham County Council.

The work will take place largely on Corbridge Road, Daisy Hill, Broomhill Terrace, Fines Road and South Magdalene.

In order to complete the work safely, and to protect engineers and members of the public,  multi-way temporary traffic lights will be used throughout the project.

The lights are expected to add some time on to journeys particularly during commuting hours, so motorists are advised to leave extra time for travel.

Chris Taylor, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works, however, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Consett and surrounding areas. “

For further information about the work please contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 or email: customercare@northerngas.co.uk.
