Anchor Institutions

Anchor institutions are large, locally-rooted organisations such as councils, universities, hospitals and big businesses with headquarters based in their community.

Together they deliver vital services, employ thousands of people, spend hundreds of millions of pounds, own and manage land. They have a long history in their region and are unlikely to move. They have an important impact on local communities and economies and are pivotal to their success and wellbeing.

Community Contribution

Anchor institutions make a positive contribution to a local area by just being there. But the decisions they make about how they operate can make that contribution far bigger.

These decisions support growth and inclusion hand-in-hand, significantly adding to local employment, business growth, skills, incomes, health and wellbeing.

Our Role as an Anchor

The Leeds Anchor Network brings together some of the city’s biggest organisations to deliver more for its people.

We joined the Leeds Anchor Network in 2021 and are pleased to be able to work alongside Leeds City Council, the NHS, Yorkshire Water and its academic institutions to help to shape approaches across local procurement, employee wellbeing, sustainability, recruitment and the environment, for the benefit of our Leeds customers and community.
