The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing more than £73,000 to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in and around the Drighlington area of Leeds. The scheme will replace 416m of metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, which will ensure a reliable gas supply to the area for many years to come.
NGN carried out essential work to upgrade the gas pipes on Whitehall Road, Drighlington, in August 2018. Engineers have now returned to the area to carry out the final phase of the programme, which is expected to take approximately five weeks to complete.
The five weeks of work will be split into the two stages. As part of stage one, work is taking place on Whitehall Road at the junction of Bradford Road and will last for approximately three weeks. In order to complete the work safely and efficiently, four-way temporary traffic signals will be in place at the junction, which will be monitored from 7am-7pm daily to help manage the flow of traffic.
During stage two, work is expected to begin at the junction of Whitehall Road and Dale Road. It is expected to start in early October and will last for approximately two weeks. Two two-way temporary traffic signals will be in place here for this period of time. These traffic signals will also be monitored from 7am-7pm daily.
NGN has worked closely with Leeds City Council to carefully plan these works in order to minimise disruption caused to members of the public.
NGN’s dedicated Customer Care Officer, Katherine Lee, will be on site throughout the five weeks, door-knocking affected residents and businesses to talk to them about the work and ensuring that the impact is kept to a minimum.
Matty McBride, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works, and thank our customers for their patience and support in getting them completed as quickly as possible”.
