The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), have this week (19 March) started the final phase to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network on Castlegate and Marygate in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing the existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones. This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project has been planned in conjunction with Berwick-upon-Tweed Town Council and Northumberland County Council to ensure the work is completed as quickly and safely as possible.

Due to the location of the gas main it has been necessary to introduce three-way temporary traffic lights at the junction of Marygate and Walkergate for approximately four weeks, meaning the works should be completed by Monday 9 April. However, between Friday 30 March and Monday 2 April the road will open as normal to allow for the Easter weekend, work will then continue on Tuesday 3 April until the end of the project.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual throughout the project.

Richie Manuel, Business Operational Leader for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We have been working closely with Berwick-upon-Tweed Town Council and Northumberland County Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused, and thank everyone for their support as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible.”

For further information about the project please contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 or email: customercare@northerngas.co.uk.
