Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work to upgrade gas pipes under Wrenthorpe Road in Wakefield.
The work, which is being carried out to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to homes and businesses in Wakefield, began on 24 February 2025 and is ongoing.
So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, some temporary traffic management measures have been put in place. This includes installing two sets of temporary three-way traffic lights on Wrenthorpe Road, including one set at the junction with Silcoates Lane.
The temporary traffic lights are being manned during peak travel times to try to ease congestion.
Daniel Grimshaw, Site Manager at Northern Gas Networks, said: “Our teams are working hard to replace the ageing gas main on Wrenthorpe Road. We’re making good progress but this is a technically complex job, so we do expect it to continue for another few weeks.
“We recognise that our work is causing some delays to travel in the area, and we’d like to reassure people that we’re doing everything we can to minimise the disruption to people’s journeys and apologise for any inconvenience caused. We’ll continue to share updates on our progress on our website, X and Facebook.”
Northern Gas Networks is advising road users in the area to allow more time to travel, particularly during peak travel periods.
The gas supply to homes and businesses in the area will not be affected.
