To mark the upcoming National Apprenticeship Week (10 – 16 February), the North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks, has congratulated its latest group of successful apprentices who will be helping shape the future of energy to prepare for the transition to net zero.

With climate change one of the biggest issues to face future generations, an apprenticeship is a great way to be at the heart of the solution.

The latest successful group of 13 apprentices received their certificates at our head office in Leeds from our CEO Mark Horsley – who started out as an apprentice himself aged 16.

They are now all officially qualified as a ‘Gas Network Craftsperson’ and demonstrated fantastic enthusiasm, commitment and talent to pass the four-year programme which combines on the job training with college work.

They have spent much of their apprenticeships joining more experienced colleagues to help install and maintain gas network equipment in this innovative sector – which is playing a key role in the UK’s transition to net zero.

One of the group, Jo Lumsden, loved helping her dad fix motorbikes as a child, but was unsure how to turn her passion into a career.

She was working in a pub when she spotted an advert for one of our apprenticeships, and said: “If anyone is unsure about applying for an apprenticeship with Northern Gas Networks, I would say ‘go for it’.

“I hope I’m now with Northern Gas Networks for the rest of my career – I’d be proud and happy if I was. I didn’t think you could get a company this big that look after you the way they do. All of my colleagues have been brilliant, I can’t thank them enough – they want you to learn as much as you want to learn.

“Also, I want to help protect the planet, and being part of an organisation where that is a huge focus is important to me.”

Mark said: “A huge well done to all of our apprentices who have worked so hard. It’s inspiring to see their energy and enthusiasm, and I know they will go on to have long, happy and successful careers. I started out as an apprentice at 16 as a cable jointer and I loved it, it taught me so much.

“They are joining our industry at an exciting time as we get our network ready to support the transition to net zero, so it’s essential we invest in future talent to meet the challenges ahead.”

Chris Adair, Apprenticeship & Training Manager at Northern Gas Networks, said: “It’s been a privilege to get to know this very talented group of people since they applied for our apprenticeship four years ago.

“Our apprenticeships are challenging – they are designed to test your skills, dedication, teamwork and much more – and I’m delighted that they have all made it through.

“For the UK to reach our climate targets, it’s essential that we help people understand the many benefits of our industry and its varied career options – which are extremely rewarding professionally, personally and financially.”

Congratulations to all of the apprentices – Freya Osment, Ryan Davies, Ethan Tate, Ethan Lee, Tom Hope, Adam Elgar, Ethan Slater, Jak Williams, Jo Lumsden, John Robinson, Harry Cullingford, Jack Paxton and Ben Davison.
