Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Leeds.

The ageing metal pipework is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future.

The work will start on Monday 18th September and is expected to last for 35 weeks in the area. It has been planned in collaboration with Leeds City Council.

So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some temporary traffic management will be put in place.

Our works will begin on Ninevah road where we will have a one-way closure at the junction of Meadow Road/Marshall Street, and a one-way closure eastbound on Jack Lane from 21/09/23-22/11/23

Our second closure begins on Marshall Street 30/11/23-13/12/23.

As our works progress our engineers will then have a road closure in place for our final phase of the works on Sweet Street which we are expecting to be in place 14/12/23-25/06/24

Businesses will remain open as usual, and a full signed diversion will be put in place for motorists.

Matt Pursell, Site manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. It is vital however, that we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Leeds.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”

For further information about the work please contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 or email: customercare@northerngas.co.uk.

Anyone that smells gas or suspects carbon monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999. This line is in operation 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

About Northern Gas Networks

Since we started operating in 2005, we’ve been leading the way as one of the most cost-efficient of the UK’s eight gas distribution networks. We deliver great value for money to our customers, as well as a whole host of social and economic benefits to our region.

We’re recognised as a dynamic, passionate, conscious and people focused team that safely and reliably delivers gas to over 2.7 million homes and businesses across the North East, northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire.

Although we don’t source the gas, fix boilers and appliances, or get involved with plumbing, we work with those that do to deliver it through a vast network of underground pipes that are constantly being invested in and upgraded.

It’s more complicated than it sounds so we’re always exploring cutting-edge thinking, revolutionary engineering practices and world-class science to find new ways to provide sustainable sources of energy.

And while our customers may not see us very often, they can sleep soundly knowing that we’re working around the clock to keep them connected and make sure they stay safe.
