Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential upgrade work in Leeds to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Garforth and Halton.
The ageing metal pipework is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future.
The projects in Garforth and Halton will both begin on 4th April and are both expected to last for two weeks, having been planned in collaboration with Leeds City Council.
So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some traffic management measures will be put in place on both schemes.
In Garforth there will 3-way traffic lights placed on the junction of Ninelands Lane with Ninelands Spur, which will be manned between 6.30am and 7pm to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.
For one week Pickering Place will be closed for through traffic with a road closure in place, although access will be maintained for residents of Pickering Place.
Meanwhile in the Halton project, three-way temporary traffic lights will be placed on the junction of Selby Road and Chapel Street, which will be manned between 6.30am and 7pm.
Signs will be displayed for motorists and a full signed diversion put in place for both projects.
While the majority of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers will need to access customer properties to complete the project and ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas.
James Knox, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Halton and Garforth.
“NGN is continuing to carry out its essential activities while following strict guidelines for safe distance working, where possible, and following good hygiene practices as we continue to live with coronavirus.
“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”
While all of NGN’s work has now resumed, extra safety precautions remain in place to keep everyone safe while we continue to live with Covid-19.
