Northern Gas Networks, the gas distributor for the North of England, has won a prestigious Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) Most Considerate Site Award for a fourth consecutive year, for their Ivory Street project in Leeds.

NGN distributes gas to 2.7 million homes and businesses to cities and towns including Leeds, Bradford, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Hull, York and Carlisle. It also provides the region’s rapid response team when a smell of gas is reported.

Since 1999, the CCS National Site Awards have been rewarding the UK’s most considerate sites for the contribution they have made towards improving the image of construction.

It looks at the measures a site has put in place to be more considerate towards local neighbourhoods and the public, the workforce and the environment.

Securing the top prize in the under £500,000 category, NGN’s 2021 Ivory Street project involved refurbishing above ground pipework near a shopping centre, plus refurbishment of three overcrossings and the removal and installation of a new bridge.

The scheme was recognised for its outstanding attention to detail and efforts to minimise environmental impact on the local area.

Community information noticeboards explaining the works were highly praised as were the NGN team’s efforts to remove graffiti from nearby buildings.

Site wellbeing cabins were noted for their recognition of protecting mental health and outstanding cleanliness and stringent Covid-19 measures were also highly scored.

Last year’s CCS National Site Awards ceremony was unable to take place due to the pandemic, but NGN received notification of their win in February.

“We’re absolutely delighted to win this CCS Award,” said NGN Project Lead Sam Bateman.

“The project was complex and challenging at times, but our on-site team worked extremely hard to minimise the impacts of our work on the surrounding community and the local environment and ensure the wellbeing of colleagues on site was looked after too.”

All NGN projects scheduled to take more than six weeks to complete are registered with the CCS and NGN rolls out CCS principles to all sites, including Emergency & Repair and Connections projects.

NGN is dedicated to maintaining its high standards on site, both for its customers and contractors. The company is constantly monitoring best practice and in doing so, regularly improving its processes and site efficiency.
