The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), are currently carrying out investigation works in the areas in and around Whitley Bay and Tynemouth after reports of a smell of gas.

We have received several reports from the area about a smell of gas in the air, we would like to reassure the community of Whitley Bay and Tynemouth that NGN are working hard to identify the source of the smell as quickly as possible.

While we are now aware of the smell of gas in the Tynemouth and Whitley Bay area, it is important to remember that if you do ever smell gas, either in your home or outside, you should call the National Gas Emergency number 0800 111 999 immediately.

To ensure the safety of colleagues, customers and the local community at this time, any works will be carried out exclusively in the street, observing strict Government guidelines for safe distance working and following health and safety guidance.

Although the majority of NGN’s planned work has been suspended during the coronavirus outbreak, essential repair and maintenance work is still being carried out, to ensure the smooth running of the gas network.

NGN also continues to provide its 24 -hour emergency gas response service. All essential work is being carried out while observing strict guidelines for safe distance working during the coronavirus outbreak.

James O’Brien, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We are working hard to investigate and resolve the smell of gas in the area. We apologise for the inconvenience. Everything is being done to ensure the safety of our workers and the public during this project, in line with Government and health guidelines.

“We are committed to ensuring the smooth running of the gas network during this challenging time, and to keeping our customers and colleagues safe.”

For further information about the project please contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 or email: customercare@northerngas.co.uk.
