The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is carrying out essential works to upgrade the gas distribution network in and around Windebrowe Avenue, Keswick.
The project, which is expected to begin on Monday 23 September with a duration of around 18 weeks, is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones. This will ensure that customers in the area continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply and can heat their homes for many years to come.
The works have been carefully planned in conjunction with Cumbria County Council and NGN has made every effort to minimise the impact of the essential works on road users and members of the public.
While still in the planning stages, it can be confirmed that the project will not impact the flood defence work that is being carried out in the town or the diversion routes that are in place while flood defence improvements are underway. Furthermore, it will not be necessary to close any roads to traffic while the gas mains upgrade is taking place.
In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently it may be necessary to install temporary three-way traffic lights at the junction of Trinity Way and Windebrowe Avenue (near to St Herbert’s C of E School) for one week from Monday 22 October.
NGN has planned this stage of the work to coincide with the school half term holidays, so that in the event that temporary traffic lights are required, the impact on road users, the school and parents is kept to a minimum.
It may also be necessary to temporary suspend parking bays on one side of Windebrowe Avenue for two weeks in October / November and NGN will be talking to local residents to keep them informed as plans progress. Access for residents will be maintained at all times.

NGN will be door knocking customers affected by the work and is holding a community drop in event on Monday 9 September from 5pm – 7pm at the Twa Dogs Inn Pub on Penrith Road where the team will be available to share more information about the work.
