From Monday (16 July), Northern gas Networks (NGN) the North of England’s gas distributor, will begin essential gas mains repair work on the A690 Durham Road.

The work, scheduled to last approximately two-weeks, has been carefully planned in collaboration with Sunderland City Council in order to minimise any disruption to customers.

In order for engineers to complete the repair as safely and quickly as possible, some temporary traffic management measures will be introduced.

During this time, the road will be closed (northbound) between the junction of Thornley Close Road and North Moor Lane. The bus lane (southbound) will also be temporarily suspended to allow the continued flow of two-way traffic. Access to Thornley Close Road will be maintained, however road users will not be able to join the A690 from Thornley Close Road and a signed diversion route will be in place.

It’s expected the work will mean extended journey times so road users are advised to allow extra time for travel during the work.

Mick Smith, Site Manager at Northern Gas Networks, said: “We’re working closely with Sunderland City Council to minimise disruption to road users, residents and businesses whilst this essential repair work takes place. We would like to thank everyone for their patience at this time and apologise for any inconvenience experienced.”

For further information about the project please contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 or email: customercare@northerngas.co.uk.
