The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is upgrading the ageing metal gas distribution network on Howden Bank (A6076), Stanley.

The essential project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the area and will involve replacing 250m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The four-week project is due to start on Monday 14 August and has been carefully planned in conjunction with the local authority.

In order to carry out the works safely and efficiently there will be two-way traffic lights in place from Fenhall Lodge to Ornsby Hill House for the duration of the works. Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual.

It is expected these works may cause some delays to journey times, so motorists are advised to leave extra time for travel. NGN will endeavour to complete the works as soon as possible, and will provide updates on progress throughout the project.

NGN’s Customer Care officers have been door knocking local homes and businesses to make customers aware of the work and we will also be using on-site signage to advise road users of the scheme.

Shaun Williams, Site Manager for NGN, said: “We have been working closely with the local council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise any disruption to customers.

“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience this essential work may cause and thank our customers for their patience and support in getting the project completed as safely and quickly as possible.”

For further information about the project please contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 or email: customercare@northerngas.co.uk.
