Commitments to People

Our four People commitments focus on creating opportunities, supporting wellbeing, building an inclusive workforce and ensuring people can access the energy and support they need to live safely and independently.

  • Enhance access to opportunities and fair jobs

  • Prioritise colleague safety and wellbeing

  • Build a diverse workforce and eliminate inequality

  • Ensure access to safe and affordable energy for customers and vulnerable communities

This page provides more information on each commitment and the progress we’re making towards delivering them.

Building an inclusive culture

We are committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels safe, valued and able to thrive.

By embedding inclusion across our organisation, improving representation and reducing barriers to opportunity, we’re building a more diverse workforce and tackling inequality.

Our 5 Colleague Communities play an important role in shaping culture, supporting wellbeing and fostering a sense of belonging for all colleagues and we’re incredibly proud of the work that they do. Our communities include Women, LGBTQIA+, Roots & Resonance, Parents & Carers and Disability.

Creating opportunities, skills and careers

Our people are at the heart of our business. We’re committed to creating opportunities for current and future talent through meaningful work experience, placements, apprenticeships and graduate programmes that inspire careers in the energy sector and build the skills needed for the future.

Through our education, employability and Net Zero programmes, we’re also helping to challenge outdated perceptions of the sector, demonstrating the wide range of opportunities available and encouraging people from all backgrounds to consider careers in energy.

We’re strengthening career pathways and development opportunities for colleagues at every stage of their career, while continuing to build a safe, inclusive and rewarding workplace. Our ambition is to be recognised as a great place to work, achieving Great Place to Work certification and creating a culture where everyone can thrive.

Safe and affordable energy

Our region has some of the highest rates of fuel poverty in the UK. We estimate that 1 in 5 customers may need extra assistance during interactions with us, and we’re providing a wealth of support through regulated and shareholder funding.

  • We’re trained around 1,000 colleagues to spot signs of vulnerability, support customers with additional needs, and know when to refer to expert partners.

  • We’re proud to hold the ISO 22458 Inclusive service provision certification and continue to help thousands of customers to access the free Priority Services Register so that they can benefit from additional help and support.

Our Centres for Warmth programme is providing safe, warm and welcoming environments for vulnerable people in some of the most deprived areas of our network.

Prioritising colleague safety and wellbeing

We prioritise colleague safety and wellbeing by embedding Wellbeing Champions across our network, supporting them to specialise in key health areas such as menopause.

Through the Better Health at Work Awards framework, we aim to maintain Ambassador Status, continuously improve self‑reported wellbeing and reduce sickness absence.
